From booking checking in and boarding the cruise, everything was very quick and easy. The captain and crew were very helpful and friendly. The captain was very thoughtful and ensured everyone got a good opportunity to see all the highlights. The smaller boat made for a comfortable and spacious trip

The peace. I enjoyed being in a smaller capacity boat. The boat was not crowded, the staff was friendly and gave us nice insight. I enjoyed the boat getting close to the waterfalls.

We are glad we went with the smaller boat cruise. Although best seats were quickly taken, it seemed everyone was able to move around at different times and enjoy different views. I would personally recommend going straight to the front of the boat on the bottom floor rather than the rooftop. We were surprised that the tour went all the way out to sea, and it was really cool to be out there. The views along the way were so stunning. You not only get lush green mountain sides but the tallest peaks show awesome geology and snow caps. We saw fur seals lazing around on a rock looking very happy. And of course getting wet by the waterfalls was really quite fun and special! Highly recommended this cruise. Perfect amount of time to be out there and soak it all in. Warm drinks provided to cozy up if the outside gets too cold, like after you go under the waterfall!

I visited Milford Sound on a perfectly sunny day and it honestly felt unreal. The views were insane from start to finish — towering cliffs, glassy water, waterfalls everywhere. Our skipper even dipped the boat right under one of the falls and it was sick. Such a cool experience and the perfect mix of adventure and scenery. If you get a good weather day, it’s unbeatable. Easily one of the highlights of my time in New Zealand.

Incredible experience - we took the last boat of the afternoon. Seeing the Sound shrouded in mist and waterfalls, getting right up under Stirling Falls and spotting seals and dolphins was a magical way to end the day.

I had been out kayaking the day prior and was not sure it was worth it to come all the way back out for the cruise. It was totally worth it! Stunning views, super comfy boat, lovely crew (didn't get his name but your guy from British Columbia is fabulous! However. Things they don't tell you (or I missed) you have to pay to park which is kind of baloney when you have no other option. Or there is an option to park out and walk in about 30 min, but no way to know that until I asked someone at check in. Also make sure you leave enough time to walk around the harbor from the paid parking to the boats. I arrived 15 minutes early as instructed and almost didn't make it

Giant Gate Falls: Milford Sound’s picture-perfect cascade

Tucked near the end of the Milford Track, Giant Gate Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Fiordland. This 30-meter cascade spills into a clear pool, framed by lush rainforest and a swing bridge that offers a front-row view.

It’s a classic stop for hikers and day-walkers: a place to pause, dip your toes in the icy water, or simply admire how the falls tumble into their own natural amphitheatre. On warm days, you’ll often see walkers taking a refreshing swim here before finishing the track.

How to see Giant Gate Falls

  • Milford Track guided walk: Join a day hike from Sandfly Point to Giant Gate Falls, with expert guides sharing stories about Fiordland’s forests and Māori history.
  • Pair your walk with a boutique cruise. Enjoy a 1h 45m trip on a 75-passenger vessel, closer to the cliffs, Stirling Falls spray, and seal colonies. Ideal for photographers, couples, and anyone avoiding big crowds.

Book a small-boat Milford Sound boutique cruise

  • Combo options: Choose land-only, sea-only, or a seamless land-and-sea combo for a full day of Fiordland’s best.
